FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas infielder Nolan Souza was named the SEC freshman of the week by the league office Monday after he helped power the No. 1 Razorbacks to a conference series sweep of Ole Miss over the weekend.

Souza, a 6-3, 220-pounder from Honolulu, hit .571 with a team-high 3 home runs, 9 RBI and a 1.286 slugging percentage during a 4-0 week for the Razorbacks.

The left-handed hitting Souza had three multi-hit games, including two in the sweep of the Rebels. He went 8 for 14 in the wins over Arkansas State and Ole Miss to reach a team-leading .357 batting average.

Souza homered twice and 5 RBI in last Saturday’s 7-4 series finale for his second multi-homer game of the season. He also homered twice during an 8-0 win over Missouri on March 15.

Souza hit a grand slam against Arkansas State.

He is the second Razorback this season to win SEC freshman of the week honors. Left-handed pitcher Colin Fisher earned it on Feb. 26 for 10 strikeouts, no earned runs and a win in his first 7 1/3 innings as a Razorback.
