Arkansas track freshman runs world-leading 400 time

University of Arkansas freshman Kaylyn Brown won the 400 meters in an outdoor world-leading time of 49.95 seconds Saturday at the Tom Jones Invitational hosted by Florida in Gainesville, Fla.

Brown’s time ranks No. 7 on the all-time collegiate list, No. 5 among United States’ collegians and No. 2 on Arkansas’ career list behind Britton Wilson’s collegiate record of 49.13 set in 2023.

Brown also ran the second leg of the Razorbacks’ 1,600 relay — along with senior Amber Anning and juniors Rachel Glenn and Aailyah Pyatt — that won in an collegiate-leading time to 3:26.10, which ranks No. 10 on Arkansas’ all-time list.

Arkansas’ 400 relay of sophomore Ariane Linton, senior Rosey Effiong, Brown and Anning finished second among collegiate teams with a 43.13 time. LSU had the top collegiate time at 43.05.

Glenn, running the 400 hurdles for the first time since 2022 when she was at South Carolina, finished second in a career-best 54.91.

Glenn, who won this year’s NCAA Indoor high jump title, finished second in the 400 hurdles behind Michigan’s NCAA champion Savannah Sutherland, who won in 54.86.

Sutherland and Glenn have the top two ties in the world this outdoor season. Glenn’s time is No. 2 on Arkansas’ career list behind the 53.08 school record set by Wilson in 2022.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., Arkansas junior Sydney Thorvaldson ran 15:25.07 in the 5,000 to set the Arkansas school record.

Thorvaldson, who finished fourth among collegiate runners, broke the previous Arkansas record of 15:25.10 set by Dominique Scott in 2016.

Arkansas redshirt freshman Mia Cochran finished as the top collegian in the 1,500 at the Tom Jones Invitational, running 4:15.59. Cochran finished second behind former Razorback Shafiqua Maloney, who won in 4:15.30, which set a national record for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Anning took third in the 400 in 50.08 and Arkansas senior Nickisha Pryce fourth in 50.13. Anning was fifth in the 200 in 22.65.

In men’s competition at the Tom Jones Invitational, Arkansas senior Lance Lang finished fourth in the 100 in 10.21 to rank No. 9 on the UA’s all-time list.

Lang also ran 20.44 to take eighth in the 200 and ranks legs on the Razorbacks’ fifth-place 1,600 relay (3:03.89) and on their eighth-place 400 relay (39.46).

The Razorbacks’ 1,600 relay also included James Benson, TJ Tomlyanovich and Steven McElroy. Connor Washington and Tevijon Williams joined Lang and McElroy on 400 relay.

Arkansas will host the John McDonnell Invitational on Thursday and Friday.
