UA track teams show well in Baton Rouge

The Arkansas men’s and women’s track and field teams had strong showings on Saturday at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, where the Razorbacks will return in two weeks for the SEC Championships.

Senior Rojé Stona led the No. 1-ranked Arkansas men’s team by breaking his own school record and won the discus with a throw of 219 feet, 10 inches.

Stona’s mark ranks No. 4 on the all-time collegiate list and broke the UA record of 218-7 he set two weeks ago at the Mt. SAC Relays. Arkansas sophomre Ralford Mullings finished second in the discus at 203-11.

Jaydon Hibbert, a Razorbacks freshman who won the NCAA triple jump title indoors, finished first in Baton Rouge with a leap of 56-4 on his only attempt, which is No. 5 on the UA’s career list.

Arkansas also finished third and fourth in the triple jump with senior Carey McLeod going 51-5 sophomore Wayne Pinnock 51-4 1/4.

Arkansas senior Ayden Owens-Delerme, the defending NCAA decathlon champion, ran 50.28 in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time as a collegian to take second. He now ranks No. 6 on the UA’s all-time list.

Razorbacks senior Phillip Lemonious won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.63 to edge former Razorback Omar McLeod, an Olympic gold medalist and NCAA champion who was second in 13.67.

Sophomore Kason O’Riley won the high jump (7-0 1/4) for the Razorbacks and senior Jordan West was second in the shot-put (66-2 1/4) and junior Myles Richter second in the 1,500 (3:51.90).

Arkansas’ No. 3 women’s team got victories from juniors Britton Wilson in the 400-meter hurdles (55.76) and Ackera Nugent in the 100-meter hurdles (12.52) and from sophomore Rosey Effiong in the 200 (personal-best 22.87) and senior Amanda Fassold in the pole vault (13-10 1/2).

Nugent, a transfer from Baylor, has a career-best time of 12.45, but her 12.52 ranks No. 2 Arkansas’ all-time list. Effiong also took second in the 400 (51.31) with top time among collegians.

The Razorbacks took the top four spots in the pole vault with junior Kaitlyn Banas and senior Bailee McCorkle both clearing 13-4 1/2 for second and third, and junior Mackenzie Hayward clearing 12-10 3/4 to tie for fourth.

Arkansas sophomore Sydney Billington was third in the high jump (5-9 3/4).
